1st millennium BC-1st millennium AD. An ovoid grinding stone in granite, with inclusions. 1.4 kg, 12 cm (4 3/4"). Cf. Craddock, P.T., Craddock, B.R. & Langenscheidt, A. Stone Mining Hammers and Their Shafts from Pre-Hispanic Mesoamerica in Mining History: The Bulletin of the Peak District Mines Historical Society vol.15, no.1. From a Hampshire collection. Grinding stones were used in Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican mines for the purpose of crushing the ore extracted from the shafts. They were often river cobbles selected for their handling properties. [No Reserve]
