BIOGRAPHY:
A native of imperial Russia whose elegant, precisely drawn commissions hang in corporate headquarters and the homes of the well-to-do, Mr. Yaron knew firsthand what it was to be itinerant. He had wandered the world with his family, painting portraits to keep them afloat, after their evacuation from Shanghai in 1949. The Yarons gained visas to come to the United States in 1952. Within the next few years, his work included a portrait of Mamie Eisenhower, wife of the president, commissioned by a national Republican group, and a portrait of United Nations Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold. The Yarons settled in Washington in 1963. During a career of 64 years, Mr. Yaron painted portraits of the Russian opera star Fyodor Chaliapin; half a dozen Latin American presidents; National Symphony music director Mstislav Rostropovich and his wife, soprano Galina Vishnievskaya; Frank Sinatra's wife, Barbara; Indian leader V.K. Krishna Menon; presidential press secretary James S. Brady; and others. His 1956 portrait of Mrs. Eisenhower now hangs in the Capitol Hill Club here. Although Mr. Yaron was principally known as a painter of classical realist portraits, he also did seascapes and landscapes, animal studies and other genre work. His series of drawings of migrant workers was exhibited at the Strathmore Hall Arts Center in 1985. Mr. Yaron was born in Reval, in what is now the Soviet republic of Estonia. He and his father fled to Shanghai after the Communist revolution of 1918. Mr. Yaron studied art there with exiled professors of the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts. He later established one of the largest advertising agencies in the Far East and became well known for his religious art, paintings of Chinese life and portraits. After surviving the Japanese occupation of Shanghai during World War II, Mr. Yaron was evacuated with his wife and two children three months before the takeover of the city by Chinese communists. They set out on an odyssey that took them to the Philippines, Australia, Europe, South and Central America and finally the United States. During the extensive travels aboard ship, Mr. Yaron would paint the portraits of passengers and crew members. He was below decks during the family's entire first passage through the Suez Canal, his wife and collaborator, Helena Yaron, recalled, because he was busy painting a portrait of the ship's cook. As the family settled temporarily in various countries, Mr. Yaron would gain commissions for portraits of officials or murals for presidential palaces. "We went from one little country to another," Helena Yaron said. "One president would have a portrait done, and then the neighboring president would send us a visa to have his done." Mr. Yaron was a member here of the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. In addition to his wife, of Washington, he is survived by a son, Alexander Yaron Jr. of Palm Springs, Calif.; a daughter, Camillia Yaron of Washington; and a sister, Marina Bolt of New York City.
