Patinated bronze figure, garniture, Diane de Gabies, signed A Lemaire on tree stump, late 19th / early 20th c., base with small surface wear, 14" H. 9 lbs. Auguste Lemaire founded in 1851, at 10 rue Saintonge in Paris, in the Marais district a workshop of art bronzes, producing clocks, cups, statuettes and further candelabra. He entered the Coucil of Manufacturers in 1855 and at the Universal Exhibition held in Paris in 1855, he was awarded a medal of second class. He cast Meditation by A. Schoenewerke (1820-1885), Leonardo da Vinci and Benvenuto Cellini by A.E. Carrier- Belleuse (1824-1887), Cyprian nursing Love by J.E. Marcellin (1821-1884) (exhibited at the Salon of 1863) and Daphnis and Chloe by M. Moreau (1822-1912). In 1862, Lemaire extended his business to 121 rue Vieille-du-Temple while keeping his workshop in rue Saintonge. According to Alfred de Champeaux (1833-1903), inspector of Fine Arts of the City of Paris, Lemaire produced andirons, candelabra and chandeliers after Robert Brothers’ models in the Renaissance or Henri II style, as well as Louis XVI style clock sets. The company was then taken over by E. Lhose.
