BIOGRAPHY:
Gilbert was born on August 13, 1926 in Milwaukee, WI, the son of Eugene and Flora (Ritz) Schmidt and was the youngest of six siblings. Gilbert Schmidt was Wisconsin artist. He had several decades long career as a teacher of art in the Random Lake School District. He was in the US Navy from 1944-1946, followed by his attendance at the Milwaukee Teacher's College, now UW Milwaukee, and a Master's degree from Un. of Iowa in Art History and Education. His early works from the 40's and 50's showed skill with portraits, religious themes and military subjects, but as time went on the subjects and technique became brighter and more colorful. Later in life he produced images of ships/boats, side wheel steamers, views of exotic Florida and sea shores.Mr. Schmidt was very active in the community of Random Lake as a member of the Random Lake Lions Club and St. Mary's Parish (now Our Lady of the Lakes).
