A painter of village scenes of the English country side, Gozzard is believed to have been born in 1888. However, Census research has shown that James Walter Gozzard was born im 1862 in Northchurch, Berkhamstead, Herts. In the 1871 Census he is living with his father (A sawyer in a saw mill) and his brother James W. and sister Elizabeth K. in Croxley Green, Herts. There is also a 17 year old Mary A. Caldwall described as this father's 'sister-in-law' who is the Housekeeper as his mother Elizabeth had only just died. In 1881 he is still with his family who now live in Old Ford, Bow, London. His father is now a Saw Mill Forman. In this Census he is called Walter and works as a Clerk to a Brass Finisher. His sister Elizabeth is listed as Kate. His father has married Mary Ann, his wife's younger sister who had been looking after the family since the death of her sister. His father James and step-mother Mary Ann have their new family of 3 boys aged 6 yrs, 3 yrs and 3 months. In 1894 the marriage of James Walter Gozzard to Maud Anthony (b. 1877, Luton) was registered at Hackney.
