Description
Vintage large still from the silent romantic drama film "Way Down East" (1920, directed by D.W. Griffith and starring Lillian Gish). Anna (Lillian Gish) is a poor country girl who is tricked by handsome man-about-town Lennox (Lowell Sherman) into a fake wedding. When she becomes pregnant, he reveals the truth of their relationship and leaves her... Vintage silver photo print with some visible silvering, probably 1970s-80s.
Large photo; 14" x 10.7/8" [35.6cm x 27.6cm] including the blank margins which are c.3/4" to 1/2"; glossy paper, the photo is attached to the heavier paper, some nice silvering: metallic mirroring at the corners and in the middle, very good condition.
Silvering' on the photo, the silver oxidation of the silver-based emulsion is characterized by a yellowing and sometimes silver mirroring along the lines of contrast between high and low lighting and can appear partially or cover the whole image.
Lillian Diana Gish (1893-1993) was an American actress, director and screenwriter. Her film acting career spanned 75 years, from 1912, in silent film shorts, to 1987. Gish was called "The First Lady of American Cinema", and is credited with pioneering fundamental film performance techniques. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Gish as the 17th greatest female movie star of classic Hollywood cinema.
