Description
This is a museum quality, important piece produced by Hawkes and signed and engraved by master engraver William Morse who was taught directly by H.W. Fritchie. William Morse was not only the head of the engraving department at Hawkes for a long time, but also one of the only American-born engravers from the period. He trained many American engravers, and is widely considered to be the greatest American engraver. He engraved the Hawkes Edenhall goblet that sold in 2008 for $60,000. The scene on this piece is a recreation of Pierre-Auguste Cot's, Springtime painting (1873). This is an iconic, extraordinary painting of two lovers and the celebration of Springtime. Read more about it at this link: https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/438158The engraving is just incredible - so thinly done, but yet with so many layers of relief. The fabric (which houses the Morse signature), flowing from the girl's dress seems carried by wind and is somehow translucent appearing as well - it's stunning! Even the eyes of the boy express emotion. Really neat, deep engraving draped up the side of the piece and little dots engraved all around the edge of the rim. This is a museum-quality, one-off piece by perhaps the best engbraver that ever lived. Do not miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own it.
