Description
**Originally Listed At $300**
East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A large Chinese boxwood toggle carved in the shape of a coin, featuring four script characters on each side surrounding a central square hole. The outer edge is adorned with intricate plant and animal forms in high relief, including a flower, bird, squirrel, and bat. The Chinese character 'fu' represents 'blessings' or 'good fortune,' and the bat, due to its similar pronunciation, is also a symbol of luck and prosperity. Coins themselves and representations such as this carving, were popular as toggle talismans of abundance and fortune. Holes are pierced through the outer edge for suspension as a toggle or counterweight for a tobacco pouch or other item hung from a belt. While the Japanese netsuke - used to secure cords for inro - is more widely known, it was likely inspired by Chinese belt toggles (zhuizi or guajian), which served a similar purpose in traditional Chinese attire. Size: 2.3" Diameter x 0.4" W (5.8 cm x 1 cm)
Provenance: private Truchas, New Mexico, USA collection, acquired early 2000's
