Item Details
Description
N. R. A. Fine to near excellent condition Moore seven shooter revolver. 100% original, 100% complete, and mechanically perfect. Retains most of the original Factory blue and silver plating on the frame. The back strap is nicely engraved with the owners Rank and name. SERGT A.P. MILLER Also present is a very old ink tag stating that Miller was in the 149th Pennsylvania Bucktails, Company B? or D?.
Now, here comes the fun part. There are two soldiers named A. P. Miller in the 149th Pennsylvania. One was missing in action at the Wilderness. The other was discharged in August 1863 for disability. Neither shows the rank of Sergeant in his record.
A little more in-depth research should clarify the ownership. Some record in some archives is going to explain the rank of Sergeant and in which company he served.. I leave that job to you.
Union Army record states … The men of the 149th were of fine physique, all were accustomed to the rifle, and wore the bucktail (pinned to the side of their cap) as did the original regiment of that name… Feb. 1863… it joined the Army of the Potomac at Belle Plain, Va. … It was in position on the right of the line at Chancellorsville… It arrived on the field of Gettysburg at 11 o'clock a. m. on the first day of the battle and at once went into position on the ridge in front of the seminary, near the Chambersburg pike. It maintained its position with great heroism throughout the first day until the whole line retreated through the town. Its heaviest losses were sustained in the fierce fighting of this day, though it was fearfully exposed during the great artillery duel of the third day. It lost 53 killed, 172 wounded and 111 captured or missing, a total of 336. … On May 4, 1864, it moved on the Wilderness campaign and fought at the battles of the Wilderness, Laurel hill, the North Anna, Totopotomy, Cold Harbor and the first assaults on Petersburg. Its losses were enormous from the beginning of the campaign up to the end of July, mounting to 34 killed, 249 wounded and I2I missing, a total of 404.
