Item Details
Description
A pair of stockinette black doll sisters 17 & 18 inches. These great folky black stockinette cloth doll sisters are hand sewn, their faces are nicely embroidered, and their hair is made from scraps in the sewing box. One has mohair and the other has caracal lamb's wool trim. They are firmly stuffed with cotton and are just a darling pair. Their dresses are the color of aged cheddar cheese. They are simplistic in the making with child like stitches and some treadle sewing machine stitches mixed in. Their faces have the holes in the first layer that is seen so often in black stockinette dolls. The iron oxide in the black dye is caustic so where the stockinet is stretched over a rounded shape eventually it tends to give way. Most of these dolls are made with double layers so the effect is not so shocking. It is not a sign of misuse or abuse. One of the dolls has a replaced arm that is a little shorter. I think they are really something special. These girls are 17 and 18 inches and are circa 1890. Condition: Minor scattered holes to first layer of stockinette. Temp No 755
