James Lippit Clarke (Am. 1883-1969) bronze casting "Grizzly Bear", signed on base "(c) Jas. L Clark SC". 23 1/2" high, 16 1/2" wide, 9 1/2" deep. Clark studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and was a designer for Gorham. He later became Director of Specimen Preparation and Installation at the American Museum of Natural History until his retirement in 1949. He was an artist, taxidermist, big game hunter and creator of habitat groups for the Museum, maintaining his office at the Museum and at his own industrial exhibits company.
