Lot 0324
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Late Preclassic 400-100 BCE. This carved, jade-green and brown speckled hardstone axe god was so finely carved that the features virtually flow. It's forms like these that must have inspired the early modern British sculptor Henry Moore! The Mezcala specialized in abstracting human physiognomy, saying so much through line and volume. 5-1/4"H x 2"W x 1-3/4" D.

Provenance: Ex Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL: acquired prior to 1970.
