Description
Vintage set of four [4] pieces: two [2] small coupe soup, cereal or fruit bowls with two [2] saucers, "English Village Olde Staffordshire Salem China Co. Finest English Ironstone, hand engraved under glaze, permanent colour; (c) Salem, England."
The bowls are 5.1/4" [13.4cm] across at the top, c.1.1/2" [3.8cm] deep. The saucers are 5.1/2" [14cm] across. No chips, no hairlines, fine condition.
William Smith, John and Patrick McNichol, and Dan Cronin, formerly employed by Standard Pottery in East Liverpool, Ohio, founded the Salem China Company in 1898. Initially, the company made heavy hotel ware. Due to financial problems, it was sold to F. A. Sebring in 1918. Under the management of Frank McKee, who served as general manager from 1918 to 1950, and Sebring's son Frank, Jr., the company became very successful through the sale of dinnerware. When McKee retired, he was succeeded by J. Harrison Keeler, husband of F. A. Sebring's granddaughter Gretchen. Salem China continued to manufacture dinnerware until 1967.
