Hudson Automobiles Neon Dealer Sign

Canadian. Late 1930s-early 1940s. Single-sided porcelain (SSP) with neon. Offered here is a fabulous, high quality, original dealer sign advertising the Hudson Motor Car Company. The sign was purchased by the consignor, who noted that the sign came out of George Merkley's garage in Belmore, Ontario (northwest of Kitchener, Ontario). George Merkley ran "George Merkley Garage Machinery Sales and Service" from 1933 to 1958. It is unknown where George obtained the sign as he was not a Hudson dealer. It was common practice, as much in the day as it is today, for garages and gas stations to fill their walls with petroliana advertising, and what better sign to have than this beautifull neon piece that would have nicely enhanced the appearance of the garage. The Hudson Motor Car Company, founded in 1909, was an American automaker in Detroit, Michigan. In Canada, vehicles made by the Hudson Motor Car Company were assembled, by Hudson Motors of Canada, in Tilbury Ontario from 1932 to 1941 and then again from 1950 to 1954 (the break in assembly was a result of WWII). Hudson cars were popular in Canada with records showing a rather brisk business. This is an exceptional dealer sign with beautiful cobalt coloring and deco-style logo representing the Hudson brand. It is as nice unlit as it is lit up. It is a rare, complete surviving example of an early Canadian neon dealer sign that will be an excellent complement to any collection. Remnants of a manufacturer's decal remain on the underside of the can marked "Macey Neon Displays". 34" x 72" x 12. Authenticated by The Authentication Company (TAC #Sign - 500499. Left end - 500500. Grade: Sign - 9.5. Left end - 9.25. Right end - 9.25. Excellent condition. Tested and working. Colors are vibrant and glossy. Original bull-nose ends and hanging brackets. Original can and access panels. Minor porcelain loss to left bull-nose where it connects to the sign. Minor porcelain chips and oxidation along the lower edge. 2 minor porcelain chips at extreme left centre edge.
