Lydia Winston Malbin, Birmingham, Michigan
Lydia Winston Malbin (1897-1989) was the daughter of famed Detroit architect Albert Kahn (1869-1942). A graduate of Vassar College and the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Malbin built one of the most renowned collections of European modernism and abstraction in the United States, specializing in Italian Futurism. Works from her collection are in numerous institutions, including the Detroit Institute of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of Art. In 1984, a Detroit News magazine article dubbed her 'The First Lady of Modernism.'
