Arthur Parton (American, 1842-1914) large painting on canvas depicting a sunset over an inlet. The scene is masterfully rendered with vibrant warm tones illuminating purple clouds against a blue sky, with the silhouette of a building atop a cliffside providing excellent contrast. The cliff leads into a calm body of water dancing with the reflections of the surrounding hues, a single sailboat coasting along the left. Signed and dated lower right.Displayed in a magnificent gilt frame with beveled bands, beaded trims, and foliate relief around the perimeters. Affixed with a picture light at the top.

Arthur Parton was a Hudson River School artist known for landscape painting. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and spent a large part of his career living in New York, painting throughout the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains. Parton's work is included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Newark Museum, the Hudson River Museum, the High Museum of Art, and the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts.
