Item Details
Description
The document on this historic revolver is dated 1981 and is notarized. It was signed by Mary Louise Redden. She lists this gun by serial number relating that her father Robert Willita, her mother and herself were guests of Mr. Germark who was the Superintendent of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation along with his assistant, Miss Lou Bondi in 1927 when President Calvin Coolidge was also visiting. His famous visit and speech occurred in August of that year. She further states that her mother and Miss Bondi were old school chums. It was during the visit that Mr. Germark presented this Remington Model 1875 to her father where he stated this was an Indian Police gun and had been displayed at the museum in Wounded Knee. It is well documented that the Indian Police were issued nickel Remington 1875's. The battle of Wounded Knee needs no history lesson here. Pine Ridge was located in South Dakota having been in the territory of the Great Sioux reservation, created on March 2, 1889. Many famous Indian Chiefs resided at Pine Ridge during this era to include Oglala Lakota leaders Red Cloud and Crazy Horse. This revolver is fairly standard, type 2 with the .44 (caliber) stamp on left side of frame having been stamped on the grips for early models along with the knife blade front sight, not cone. Finished in nickel with two piece walnut grips. Serial number is stamped on grip frame at base. Also comes with a photo copy of Indian Police plainly showing two men with nickel Remington in hand. There was never a lanyard ring on this gun. CONDITION: Fine. The right side and top of barrel retain at least 80% nickel while left side is about 20%. The one line Remington barrel address is sharp. The cylinder is a soft grey patina. The frame, trigger guard and straps retain at least 80%. Grips are fine with a few dings. The muzzle shows some heavy wear from holster and use. The action is tight but missing the loading half cock. Bore is sharp and bright.
