Item Details
Description
The accompanying Sheriff's badge is inscribed A. Sanchez Webb County Texas, in which Laredo is located. This booming southern Texas town on the Mexican border swelled from 5200 residents in 1881 to over 22,000 by 1900. Amador Sanchez was a Webb County sheriff from the late 19th century and into the early decade of the 20th century. One well known incident involving Amador occurred in 1913 and was reported in the El Progresso newspaper in which Sanchez challenged a defamatory article by shooting the writer of the paper, Manuel Vigil, while accompanied by his deputy. This Colt was manufactured in 1893. The barrel is stamped COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER, is finished in standard blue and case color with two piece ivory grips. All serial numbers are matching. The barrel has the Colt legend with two line patent date on left side of frame. The revolver is accompanied by a scare Newton & Andrews of El Paso Texas (1895-1906) holster. It is a double loop, full skirt and border tooled with large maker stamp in center. This lot also includes the original Texas eagle topped sheriffs badge with central Texas star once worn by Sanchez and a modern plaque that once resided in a museum display. CONDITION: Very good. The barrel still retains a dull blueish hue with all legible barrel legends with some bright blue at base of barrel. The cylinder is patina with some blue in the flutes. Frame colors are patina and there are flashes of blue on trigger guard and back strap. There is some overall age freckling. The grips are well aged with great color and fit fairly well with little shrinkage. The action works correctly with strong half cock. The bore is well defined and sharp with minor residue. The holster is solid with a fairly strong maker stamp but showing some usual chaffing. A great early gun and holster with Texas attribution.
