Broadside. 30.5x24 cm (12x9¼"), printed in black on yellow paper. Inscribed at foot: "Smokey the Bear/Gary Snyder." Accompanied by an Autograph Note, signed, 1 page, undated, with printed letterhead of "Kitkitdizze / 18442 MacNab Cypress Road / Nevada City, CA 95959." about 50 words.
First Edition of the broadside, which Snyder had printed in an edition of 1,000 copies for the Sierra Club's Biennial Wilderness Conference in San Francisco in 1969. In accordance with the poet's admonition at the foot of the broadside that the poem "may be reproduced free forever," this brilliant piece has been reprinted many times in many formats. Broadside reprints seem to have been larger than the original. In the note, written from the remote Sierra-foothill retreat which the poet built in 1971, Snyder thanks 'Edward' for a booklet on the Sierra -- which he had read in the UC-Berkeley library in 1954 -- and dispatches the broadside in return: "The enclosed is not rare, but if enough time goes by it (like everything) will be..."
