Description
This is a beautiful bronze and marble Empire clock that features a young woman reading a book, seated in an antique-style chair. It is known as "The Reading Woman." It is composed of bronze, partially gilt and painted, with an enamel-faced clock and a green marble base. It is unmarked but does display that it was made in France. It measures H 13 x W 11.5 x D 11.5 inches.Â
Condition: The clock is not working, and the female figure is slightly loose in place
This piece is known to be based on a drawing by Jean-André Reiche titled La leçon d'astronomie that was published in 1807.Â
