Item Details

Description

An antique 19th century French desk clock in a Japonisme style. The round case Is made of gilded bronze and alabaster painted to resemble onyx stone, adorned with beautifully detailed bronze iris flowers and centred by a circular dial with Roman numerals and reed-shaped hands. Raised on four feet modeled as bamboo stems, also adorned with a composition of ormolu bamboo stems on top. Unmarked. Note: Japonisme is a French term that refers to the popularity and influence of Japanese art and design among a number of Western European artists in the nineteenth century following the forced reopening of foreign trade with Japan in 1858.
