Origin: Vulcan Island, Schouten Islands, North of Papua New Guinea, Pre- Columbian
Dimensions:6x12x36in, On Stand 42in tall
Condition: The feathers on top of the hat have some wear.
Additional Information: A wood hand carved mask of an oval face with a goatee and abstract facial features, such as two swirls for nostrils. The face has dark wood with face paint embellishments. There is a wrapped fiber with sections of colorful beads framing the wood carved face. The mask has a cone woven basket style tall hat that is decorated with brown feathers at the tip top. The cone hat has a stick edge and a large enough opening for a human head to fit inside. The mask comes with a custom-made stand made out of wood and steel.
The basketry medium and intact superstructure is rare to find due to the natural and delicate material.
Reportedly collected in the 1960's by famed adventurer, ethnographer and former Australian patrol officer Wayne Heathcote, London, Miami.
