Origin: Sonora, Arizona and Mexico, Yaqui People of Yaqui Valley, 20th Century
Dimensions: 11x7x11 in.
Condition: Dirt and wear along the mask and cracking of the paint and mask in isolated spots.
Additional Information: A indigenous Yaqui people festival mask carved out of wood and painted bright colors and has a long nose and upturned horn-like features with ribbons attached to the ends. The mask has small openings where the mouth and eyes are, with painted long black eyelashes. There is a wire on the back for wear or hanging.
The Yaqui are known for their fierce resistance to the Spanish and to Western traditions. Masks are danced during ayahuasca ceremonies. The Yaqui are distant relatives of the Aztecs as their language closely resembles Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs.
