Description
Doyle Lane (1925-2002) Weed Pot in Glazed Earthenware, Los Angeles, circa 1970

A striking example of Doyle Lane’s iconic Weed Pot series, this hand-thrown glazed earthenware vessel was created in the 1970s in his Los Angeles studio. The form features a flattened spherical body with a slender neck, intended to hold a single flower stem or minimal arrangementblurring the line between sculpture and functional vessel.

This particular piece is finished in Lane’s metallic glaze, with thick, pooled layers, known for his innovative glaze chemistry and intuitive firing process, Lane produced each pot with distinctive surface variations that were rarely, if ever, replicated.

What makes this example especially rare is how the glaze application, common in Lane’s high-fire method has run and pooled at the base during firing, partially encroaching upon the artist’s signature. Unlike many other weed pots that were subsequently ground down for a more even finish (sometimes diminishing or obscuring the signature), this piece was left intact, preserving the full integrity of the artist’s choice and the glaze’s natural movement. The decision to retain this organic finish reflects Lane’s embrace of unpredictability in the kiln and highlights the duality of intention and chance in his process.

Each of Lane’s weed pots varied in size, shape, and glaze, making every example a unique, sculptural expression of his refined ceramic vocabulary. They embody the mid-century California studio pottery ethos, where material experimentation met minimalist form.
