Description
Calder, Alexander (1898-1976) American Artist. Lithograph on Paper - Unsigned. COA provided. Lot one, titled "DLM190- Composition II" showing the organization of elements such as lines, shapes, colors, and space. Lot two is showing a yellow crescent moon, and is titled "Lune Jaune", French for "Yellow Moon". Lot one Paper measures 11x15 and framed to overall size of 19x25. Lot two Paper measures approximately 10 x 14 and framed to the overall size of 19x23. Alexander was raised along side a family of artist, his father was a sculptor and his mother was a painter. From a young age his parents fueled his ambition in creating art and by the age of eight he had his own workshop wherever the family lived. This lead to his first sculptor being presented to his parents at age 11, where his talent in handling materials was revealed. Through high school, Calder left his talent behind but picked it back up after college where he took many different opportunities of skill development, which lead him to a job illustrating for the National Police Gazette, which caught the attention of "The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus" to sketch circus scenes for two weeks in 1925. This type of work was very interest to Calder's and what inspired Cirque Calder, a complex and unique body of art. This represents performers, animals, and props he had observed at the "Ringling Bros. Circus". Soon after he moved to Paris where this type of art was turned into physical pieces, where his passion and ambition of sculpting was brought to life. Sculpting soon became his main focus using different materials bronze, fabric, wire, etc. and was even labels "King of Wire" and structures what he is best known for today which the inventor of the mobile, a forerunner of kinetic sculpture. He also constructed non-movable sculptural works known as stabiles. Condition: Very Fine
