Pablo Picasso Ceramic Zoomorphic Pitcher
Pablo Picasso Ceramic Zoomorphic Pitcher
Item Details
Description
Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973). "Pichet Zoomorph" (Zoomorphic Pitcher), hand painted ceramic vessel, November 1, 1954. Edition 26 of 50. Carved "11-1-54" on neck of vessel (beneath black glaze). Inscribed "EDITION PICASSO 26/50" as well as marked with "MADOURA PLEIN FEU" and "EDITION PICASSO" stamps on underside. A mesmerizing bird-shaped earthenware ceramic pitcher that features Picasso's expressive facial imagery - note the large, lashed eyes on the vessel's mouth, flanking the spout which protrudes like a petite beak. In addition, a plethora of stylized linear and dotted motifs, all rendered in black and green over a crackle white glaze, come together to create abstract plumage adorning the avian vessel's body, feet, tail, and handle as well as a star-motif across the bird's chest. Among the rare limited edition ceramics Picasso created with the Madoura pottery workshop in Vallauris in the South of France! Size: 10.5" L x 8" W x 12.5" H (26.7 cm x 20.3 cm x 31.8 cm)

Pablo Picasso collaborated with the Madoura pottery studio to create ceramic works for almost 25 years. Georges and Suzanne Ramie founded the Madoura Pottery studio in Vallauris, France. The Ramies are probably best known for their wonderful collaborations with Picasso which resulted in an impressive oeuvre of Picasso ceramics. The Madoura pottery studio (Madoura being an acronym for MAison + DOUly (Suzanne?s maiden name) + Ramie) opened in an abandoned factory building on April 29th, 1938. Picasso first discovered the Madoura workshop in 1946 and from then on maintained a 24-year collaboration, creating works inspired by his sketches.

Of note: Another Picasso "Pichet Zoomorph" from this 1954 edition was exhibited at the Cyprus Museum's "Works In Clay" exhibition organized by the Department of Antiquities as part of the Picasso Mediterranee programme and led by the National Picasso Museum in Paris. The exhibition ran from June 12 - September 8, 2019 and included Picasso ceramics alongside Cypriot antiquities to "highlight specific themes, shapes and motifs of antiquity whose echoes archaeologists discern in Picasso's works" according to the curators, Andri Michael and Eftychia Zachariou-Kaila.
