Item Details
Description
A painted terracotta sculpture with abstract geometric forms by the Russian-American artist Alexander Ney (b. 1939), produced in the year 2012.
Ney was born in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) in 1939. He studied under the influential Russian sculptor V. V. Lishev in his teenage years before attending the Leningrad Academy of Arts and later the Moscow Surikov State Academic Institute of Fine Arts. In 1972 he left the Soviet Union for France, citing the pressure of the government's attempts to conform his artwork to the mandated Socialist Realism style. While living in France he met the famed Dutch-American artists Elaine and Willem de Kooning who convinced him to move to America. To this day he is based in New York where he has made a name for himself in the art world. In 2009 the NCCA in Moscow held a special exhibition in honor of his 70th birthday, with NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg writing a piece for the accompanying publication praising him for his many accomplishments and contributions to the culture of the great city of New York.
America, 20th century.
Dimensions: H: 15 1/4 in., (38.8 cm.)
