Manuscript Document, 8pp large folio, Rhode Island, 1752, “Brig Polly John Walton, Master Dr. to sundry accounts for her first cost & outsets for Jamaica one half on acct of Moses Levy three eights on account of Wm Vernon & one eight on acct of David Moore…” and includes hundreds of entries for different services performed on the ship by expense and amount and listing the payer. Includes under “To Moses Levy for his acct supplies, viz….paid a negro for 4 days work $4…” also includes entries for painting and making wood horse head for the ship. Fine condition.The Brig Polly was owned by James De Wolf a prolific slave ship owner and politician from Rhode Island. In 1791, DeWolf was indicted for murder by a grand jury in Newport, Rhode Island. The case was widely reported in the New England press.[4] He was alleged to have directed the murder of a female African slave in 1789 who was sick with smallpox on the ship Polly, which he commanded; after having been treated to the best of the crew's knowledge, she was bound to a chair and lowered overboard.William Vernon (1719-1806), of Newport, Rhode Island, was a merchant in the Atlantic slave trade who played a leading role in the Continental Congress' maritime activities during the American Revolution. In 1774, Vernon was member of the committee of correspondence between Newport and Boston. As president of the Eastern Navy Board during the Revolution, he was responsible for building and outfitting the ships of the Continental Navy. William Vernon was one of the charter members of the Artillery Company of Newport, and is the namesake of the Vernon House.Moses Levy (1704-1792) Jewish merchant and importer who transacted in enslaved Africans with James De Wolf.
