PROFUSELY DECORATED STONEWARE JAR

Item Details
Description
Marked "BOUGHNER GREENSBORO" on reverse, c. 1865. Ten-gallon jar with exceptional cobalt decoration consisting of a freehand "10" under a tornado and numerous bands of stripes and flourishes. Marked on the back. 20" high. A similarly marked crock sold by Crocker Farm (Summer 2024, lot 58) was theorized to have been made shortly after Alexander Vance Boughner took sole ownership of the pottery and removed the "A&W" from the stamp. Provenance: the collection of the late Jo Louise Brown, Zoar, Ohio. In-house shipping is available for this lot. Please see our terms for details.
Condition
One side has two star cracks (one mid-body that extends 4-5" out in four directions, and one at the base that extends nearly half way around the entire base); the other side has a line running up 3/4 of the side; all cracks/lines are stable (one has been glued); the bottom has a star crack. This jar displays very well as is, but it is very much worthy of restoration.
