Japanse Bronze Oil Lamp, Meiji Period

Item Details
Description
An exceptional and imposing Japanese bronze oil lamp from the Meiji period (late 19th to early 20th century), masterfully cast and richly detailed with both applied and incised decoration. This tall, elegant lamp stands on four robust legs formed as stylized shishi (guardian lion) heads, rising from a shaped, footed base etched with geometric motifs. The tall central shaft is adorned with high-relief dragons ascending through stylized clouds, flanked by incised avian and botanical elements. The upper oil reservoir features boldly cast phoenixes in flight, symbols of renewal and imperial grace, with fine attention given to feather textures and facial expression. This piece exemplifies the Meiji-era fascination with both technical virtuosity and the export-driven embrace of ornate, symbolic artistry. The rich, dark brown patina throughout suggests a well-preserved surface with minimal restoration. Measures approx. 63.5"h x 23"w (shade).
