Item Details
Description

An ensemble worn by Brad Pitt as Mr. O'Brien in the Terence Malick-directed coming-of-age drama The Tree of Life (Fox Searchlight Pictures, 2011). The ensemble is comprised of a long-sleeve button down shirt, a pair of pants, and a pair of shoes.

The brown cotton shirt contains a Klondike Jr. tag and the stock number "20915 DY" handwritten in black marker on the inside collar. The brown heather twill pants feature the stock number "DYKEMAN YOUNG 3108 DY" handwritten in black marker on the inside waist, and an additional tag that reads "Mr. O" attached via metal fastener on the inside.

The brown leather, round toe, lace up shoes feature Cat's Paw heels, as well as handwriting inside both shoes with the stock number "B90332 DY 10 1/2" in black marker. This reveals the size of the shoes to be 10 1/2.

Original costumes tags safety pinned on all pieces. One of the costume tags on the shirt also features names of other films, including: The Majestic, Catch Me If You Can, and Seabiscuit. This alludes to this shirt having been used in the production of those films as well.

Pitt can be seen wearing this ensemble near the end of the film as Mr. O'Brien is working underneath a car when he is approached by Young Jack (Hunter McCracken). A production still from the set shows Pitt's face clearly while wearing the ensemble in the scene, whereas in the final film where his face is mostly obstructed due to being underneath the car.

Accompanied by a copy of a memo from the costume rental house, Dykeman Young, as well as a handwritten note from Costume Supervisor Suzy Freeman that includes a reference image for the look of this ensemble. The image is a photocopy of the back of a DVD of the film adaptation of The Fountainhead (Warner Bros, 1949) with Gary Cooper's costume being the reference point.
