Josephine Baker | Bakerfix Products and Sample Display Box with Vintage Magazine Ad

A group of original products from Josephine Baker’s signature line of Bakerfix Brilliantine hair products, intended to capitalize on Baker's huge success in the 1920s and 1930s and help fans and aspiring flappers emulate her influential “Eton crop” hairstyle (short, shiny, sleek, with spit-curls pasted to the cheek and forehead).

1. One display box containing 11 small sample aluminum tubes. The display sign reads “Essayez le tube échantillon” which means “Try the sample tube” for 1.50 Francs (about 25 cents U.S.).

2. One large aluminum tube.

3. An original half-page magazine ad for Bakerfix products from the French magazine Le Sourire.

4. A fine art reprints (produced in the 1990s) of a Bakerfix hair product advertising poster from circa the 1930s.

Please note that the Bakerfix items are in fair to poor condition: The tubes are crinkled, indicating that the contents have evaporated over the past 90-plus years, or the tubes have been partially sampled. The display box is worn from age and use; the lid is separated along the fold from the box; a tiny fabric support is still in place to hold the lid in its open position.
