The scene captures a dramatic moment from the Napoleonic Wars, based on a drawing by Eugène Charpentier and engraved by Charles Geoffroy. It was published in Volume I of Histoire du Consulat et de l’Empire, a monumental historical work by Adolphe Thiers, issued in Paris in 1845.
