Description
ENGLISH REGIONAL CHIPPENDALE PINE SIDE CHAIR, the straight crest rail shaped on its lower edge over a pierced vasiform splat, and a trapezoidal seat frame, the whole raised on square legs which are connected by an offset box stretcher. Retains an old finished surface with warm color. Late 18th century. 34 3/4" HOA, 15 3/4" H seat, 14" x 19 1/2" seat.Â
Literature: See Kirk - American Furniture and the British Tradition to 1830, p. 265, fig. 927 for an English chair which shows the same form of crest rail. Kirk mentions that this is a feature found on American chairs in the southern colonies as well. The style of the splat is also a direct stylistic parallel to the chairs being produced in Williamsburg, VA in the late 18th century.
