Folger Family Golden Plover Pair

Item Details
Description
Folger Family Golden Plover Pair
Nantucket, MA, c. 1885
9 1/2 in. long
An exceptional rigmate pair of golden plover in transitional plumage with wax eyes. These Massachusetts masterworks have historically been linked to the work of Joseph Lincoln; however, recent research on Nantucket shorebird decoys points to the birds as being of island origin. Indeed, it was Lincoln who would have copied this early Nantucket maker.
Excellent original paint with even gunning wear. One has chip to wing tip.
Provenance: Grant Nelson Collection
Private Collection, Florida
Literature: Cap Vinal, "Joseph W. Lincoln," Rockland, MA, 2002, p. 68, related decoy illustrated top left.
