John Williams Casilear (1811-1893) Oil on canvas, signed lower right in monogram and dated "89, piece measures 12 x 8.5 and 15.5 x 12 inches w/frame. Artist was an American landscape painter of the Hudson River School. Originally trained as an engraver, he studied under Asher B. Durand and transitioned to painting in the 1830s. A formative 1840 trip to Europe with Durand and John Frederick Kensett helped shape his detailed, serene style. Known for tranquil river views and luminous skies, Casilear became a full member of the National Academy of Design in 1851 and remained a key figure in 19th-century American landscape painting.
