Description
John Milton Hayes (1838-1905) Note to Mrs. Allen on American Embassy, London letterhead, dated Dec 23, 1897, in Hay's hand, letting the recipient know he would call on her that afternoon. In carved matched corner silver frame, matted under plexi. OS: 11 1/2" x 9 1/2", SS:: 6 3/4" x 4 1/4". Very clean.Hayes was Private Secretary to Lincoln during the Civil War, was at his bedside when he died, Later US Ambassador to Great Britain, and Secretary of State to McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. His most significant achievements were the Investiture of the Philippines & Cuba after the Spanish-American War, advancement of the Panama Canal as an American effort & the 'Open Door' policy with China.
