East Asia, Japan, Edo to Meiji Period, ca. 19th o early 20th century CE. A large ceiling hook for over a hearth known as a jizaigake, made from wood. The surface shows signs of being placed near or over the hearth with smoke and soot residue on the surface. This type of hook is also a symbolic nod towards Daikoku and Ebisu - two of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune, both patrons to the hearth and abundance. Size: 12" L x 11" W x 14.5" H (30.5 cm x 27.9 cm x 36.8 cm)
Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired before 2000

Stable pressure fissure radiating from the top to the base, with losses along this area as well. Chips and abrasions throughout. Surface is sooty.
