alias Metamorphosis ad Libitum, or An Old Friend with a New Face, engraved throughout, title with hand-coloured vignette, 12 hand-coloured etched plates with caption below and yellow wash border, on 3 conjoined sheets folding concertina style, c.245 x 9600mm., some light spotting, with A.L.s. from the actor Charles Mathews to A.Constable Esq. of Edinburgh concerning books "…have you ever found the drawing of Mrs.Siddons?…" loosely inserted, later tan calf, gilt, by Rivière & Son, lightly rubbed and water-stained, original engraved yellow wrappers bound in (soiled and frayed, some small repairs), 4to, G.Humphrey, 1822.

⁂ Scarce work depicting an actor's different roles (including one in drag), presumably those of Charles Mathews (1776-1835), theatre manager and comic actor renowned for his impersonations and table entertainment. Only 2 copies sold at auction in the last 35 years, no copy listed on COPAC.
