BIOGRAPHY:
Dominic Toming Cheng’s primary painting medium is Acrylic on Silver Foil. It is a technique he developed not only to express himself as an artist, but to ensure that his works are unaffected by temperature and humidity fluctuations that can seriously damage works done using traditional materials. It’s not surprising that Toming found it necessary to innovate a technique that can easily withstand the rigors of climatic extremes, because his paintings are represented in collections around the world. Toming is a native of Canton, China, and he emigrated with his family to Hong Kong in the mid-1950’s. This led to his enrollment in Hong Kong’s highly regarded Lingnan Art School, where he studied Chinese Painting. He subsequently attended Hong Kong China University, graduating with a degree in Graphic Design, then he attended Hong Kong Polytechnic, acquiring a degree in Industrial Design. Following this schooling, Toming worked as an industrial designer in Hong Kong, and his packaging designs won the coveted Pacstar 74 Award. This recognition led to a scholarship for advanced study granted by the West German Government at the Darmstadt Fachhochschule, followed by practical training at Braun AG in Kronberg, and Busse Design in Ulm. In addition to acquiring valuable design experience, this scholarship enabled Toming to exhibit his paintings throughout Europe, where he won numerous awards and an enthusiastic following of international collectors. He has resided in Miami, Florida since 1976, and it was here that he established the Toming Studio, and developed his innovative and highly personal acrylic on silver foil paintings of subjects ranging from classical to contemporary ... all executed with a skill and sensivity that make them uniquely the work of Dominic Toming Cheng.
