BIOGRAPHY:
Julie Ross was born in Tampa, Florida, and grew up in Sarasota. Her greatest art influence was her exposure to the work of her renowned great-uncle, Ben Stahl. His paintings of various genre of the female form were hanging everywhere in her relatives' homes; his love of women was evident. Excelling at a four year specialized Visual and Performing Arts High School brought Julie awards and scholarships, which led her into college, attending Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota as a freshman. She transferred to The School of Visual Arts in New York City to complete a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1987. Challenging herself on a human level and questioning her '?voice', she embarked on a journey of travel that lasted over ten years. Searching and learning about the world has been of utmost importance in understanding and bringing out her own voice in her work.Julie works in a variety of mediums, which include painting in acrylic and oil on canvas or board. She uses plaster of Paris, resin, India ink and found objects.Greatly influenced by Michelangelo, she likes to allow the work to form itself onto a blank canvas by exploring the subconscious. Tapping into the sub layers of the psyche, trusting what life has given based upon her experiences emotionally, politically, sexually. Julie believes that every moment in time can be captured and expressed into the physical experience of making art.
