BIOGRAPHY:
Helen Savier DuMond, born 1872, was raised in Portland Oregon, an area known for its majestic mountains and vast tracks of timber rich land. Her family was prominent in that area, and she was raised in a privileged environment. When in her teens she headed to New York City to study at the Art Students League. While at the League she was a student of long-time, prominent instructor Frank DuMond (1865-1951), whom she later married. In the late 1890s, she went to Paris and studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts with Raphael Collin and Luc Olivier Merson. She also exhibited work at the Paris Salon in 1897 and 1898. In 1906, Helen DuMond and her husband Frank moved to Old Lyme, Connecticut when he became Director of the Lyme Summer School of Art. She was thirty-four years old, and for many succeeding years they both resided in Old Lyme and New York City where her husband continued to teach at the Art Students League. For Helen DuMond Old Lyme was an ideal place to pursue her interest in painting plein-air landscape. Memberships included the National Art Club of which she was a life member, the Art Workers Club and the Catherine Wolfe Art Club.
