Rare. The Marquess of Rockingham refers to a title within the British peerage. The most famous holder of this title was Charles Watson-Wentworth, the 2nd Marquess of Rockingham (1730?1782). He was a prominent British statesman who served twice as Prime Minister of Great Britain, first from 1765 to 1766 and then again in 1782.During his first term as Prime Minister, Rockingham's government repealed the unpopular Stamp Act, which had caused significant unrest in the American colonies. He also sought to reconcile with the American colonies and improve relations. However, his government faced challenges, and he resigned after only one year in office.Rockingham returned to power briefly in 1782 but died just three months later. Despite his relatively short time in office, he is remembered for his commitment to parliamentary reform, his support for the rights of American colonists, and his efforts to address social and economic issues in Britain.
