BIOGRAPHY:
Paul E. Maxwell (1925-2015) was an American artist and sculptor known for his abstract, grid-based work and for developing a signature technique he patented as "stencil casting"'later widely known as "Maxwell Pochoir"'used to create richly textured, layered surfaces and sculptural objects.Born in Frost Prairie, Arkansas, Maxwell's early rural surroundings influenced his sense of pure form and texture. After graduating from Principia College (1950) and studying at Claremont College, he gained early recognition with exhibitions at venues including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. He later taught in Houston and, under the sponsorship of the U.S. Information Agency, exhibited and lectured in Europe during the late 1950s and early 1960s.Throughout his career, Maxwell completed notable public commissions, such as the "Max Wall" in the Dallas Apparel Mart (featured in the film Logan's Run), a wall sculpture at Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City, and a freestanding sculpture for the Stark County Library in Ohio. His work was documented in award-winning films and is held in collections including the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts. Maxwell continued to exhibit widely in the U.S. and abroad until his death.
