BIOGRAPHY:
Landscape and seascape painter. Sources list him being born both in Germany and in New York - it is not clear which is accurate. No references have been found to him in New York naturalization papers, and censuses do not indicate him being an alien resident. He is listed in city directories as early as 1872 as an artist, which means he would have been only fourteen, fairly young to begin painting professionally but not entirely unheard of. He continued to be listed in directories during the 1880s and 1890s as an artist, maintaining a studio first at 251 Avenue A, and later at 79 Cortlandt Street.Henry Duessel lived in Manhattan for much of his career, but also appears to have lived in Mount Vernon, Westchester County, during the 1890s. At the turn of the 20th century he and his wife, Alice, were living on west 24th Street and by 1910 were living on 7th Avenue. As an artist, he was known for large, panoramic landscapes and maritime works. During the 2nd decade of the 20th century his paintings were primarily carried by the fine art departments of Abraham & Strauss in Manhattan and Frederick A. Loeser & Company, located in Brooklyn, long Island. In their advertisements Loeser's noted that the paintings they carried " ... were executed expressly for us by H. A. Duessel, a New York artist, who has won quite a reputation with his woodland and sunset subjects." Duessel's paintings were also widely reproduced on postcards and as prints and lithographs.Henry A. Duessel died in the Bronx, New York on the 6th of January 1919 at the age of sixty. His burial location is unknown. Following his death, his estate continued to market his paintings through Frederick A. Loeser & Company who advertised in 1920 "40 Paintings by the late Harry A. Duessel Offered at Very Special Prices."
