BIOGRAPHY:
Robert MacGillis was born, educated and lived his early life in Bayonne, New Jersey, a peninsula at the mouth of the Hudson River, that offers from its northeastern shore a panoramic view of the entire Manhattan skyline. Quite naturally, part of his career in art has been devoted to interpreting the ever changing moods of the city and the shorelines. After finishing his studies at Newark School of Fine Arts in 1960, he began his career as an industrial artist when he settled in Groton, Connecticut, where he was employed by General Dynamics Corporation. His choice of this area along the southeastern shore of Connecticut was ideal because of his fondness for the sea. Throughout his whole career in illustration there was always a craving to some day engage himself in the fine arts. In the late sixhes he resumed painting on a part/time basis and has never interrupted his endeavors since. Now a full/time painter holding memberships in such prominent art organizations as Academic Artists, Connecticut Watercolor Society. The Salmagundi Club, Hudson Valley Artists, The American Artists Professional League, and having had his work exhibited in most of the major national juried shows, his goals are beginning to be attaimed. Many museums, corporations and private collectors have acquired his work. He is the recipient of over 50 national and regional awards, is listed in Who's Who in American Art, Who's Who in the East and the Intensational Biographical Center in Cheshire, England.Mr. MacGillis lives and maintains his studio and gallery in the Groton Bank area of Groton, Connecticut, a historical district boardered by Fort Griswold, site of the only major battle fought on Connecticut sail in the Revolutionary War.
