BIOGRAPHY:
Marjorie Saynor (1924–2012) was a British graphic designer and illustrator born in Ferriby, Yorkshire, the daughter of an aeronautical engineer. She studied at the Royal College of Art in Hull and later received a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London.Saynor worked as a freelance illustrator and designer, producing stamp artwork for the Royal Mail in the 1970s and 1980s through Saxon Artists Ltd. She was among the pioneering female artists in British stamp design. Her commissions included five major issues: the 1970 Anniversaries, 1972 British Polar Explorers, 1973 British Explorers, 1976 British Cultural Traditions, and 1982 Maritime Heritage series.Her work was known for historical accuracy, intricate compositions, and detailed research using resources such as the Royal Geographical Society and the National Portrait Gallery. Though many of her submitted designs went unadopted, her legacy remains as a significant contributor to British philatelic art and one of the notable women shaping the visual identity of modern British postage.
