BIOGRAPHY:
Julio Camino Sanchez was a Peruvian painter, engraver, set designer, and professor. He excelled, above all, in woodcut and painting. He created highly original woodcut blocks made from apple crates with sharpened nails. He began painting watercolors at the age of twelve, teaching himself the art. He also learned printmaking independently, using the woodcut technique on blocks made from apple crates and gouges he crafted himself from sharpened nails. His work displayed an indigenous sensibility. He held his first solo exhibition while still self-taught at the Convent of San Francisco, Trujillo, in 1934. That same year he obtained a scholarship to study at the National Superior Autonomous School of Fine Arts of Peru and traveled to Lima.He began his studies in 1936 at the ENBA under the direction of Jose Sabogal and Julia Codesido , graduating in 1942.He later returned to Trujillo and worked as an illustrator for the newspaper La Industria as well as for the magazine Folklore in the 1940s. Later, in 1963, he designed the cover for the book Contemporary Woodcut. He exhibited for the first time in Lima in 1948 at the Lima Gallery, owned by Francisco Moncloa, and until 2005 he had 71 solo exhibitions that were generally presented at the Sol Gallery and the 715 Art Gallery in Peru .From then on, he alternated between Lima and Trujillo, in addition to periods spent abroad. With an indigenist style, characterized by clean and confident lines, his artistic work revolved around easel painting, murals, and set design. As a printmaker, he produced seven color portfolios in 1946, developing folk art while also incorporating the iconography of ancient Peru.In addition, he worked as a school teacher for over 60 years. In the 1950s, he painted murals at the Bartolome Herrera and Ricardo Bentin schools.
