
Description
A large carved wooden mask with raised scar designs kaolin clay pigment accenting the eyes and forehead scars, well handled and weathered with an encrusted and painted black surface. Men and boys dance such masks and add vigorous acrobatic movements. Historically, masks were worn in ritual performances for funerals, more recently they appear at Christmas and New Year celebrations and to welcome important visitors. The mask measures 15 x 11.5 inches, 22 inches tall on professional custom display stand which is included. Provenance: Ex Karl Stirner collection, noted artist, Easton Pennsylvania.
