BIOGRAPHY:
John Henry Batchelor MBE (1936–2019) was an English technical illustrator celebrated for his exceptionally detailed cutaway drawings of vehicles, aircraft, ships, and military equipment. His precise style made him highly respected among scale modelers, historians, and publishers. Batchelor began his career in technical illustration after serving in the RAF, working for companies such as the Bristol Aeroplane Company, Saunders-Roe, and Martin-Baker. As a freelance artist, he became well known through his contributions to The Eagle and later to major partwork series such as Purnell’s History of the Second World War and History of the First World War, for which he created over a thousand illustrations. His artwork also appeared widely in books and magazines, including Time-Life series, Popular Mechanics, Air & Space, and The Aeroplane. In addition to his technical work, Batchelor designed 864 postage stamps for 49 countries, making him one of the most prolific stamp illustrators in the world. He was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2013 for his services to illustration. Batchelor spent his later years in Dorset, where he continued to work and manage his publishing projects. He died in 2019 at the age of 82.
